Neal Morse – Christian Progressive Rock

One of the great Christian musicians of our time is probably someone you’ve never heard of – Neal Morse. Formerly a member of the progressive rock band Spock’s Beard, he decided to leave the successful musical group to pursue his own endeavors after a significant spiritual experience during which he became a Christian. His spirituality is now the force behind his music, but his music is no less progressive. For unfamiliar readers, progressive rock is a musical genre known for its technical virtuosity, odd-time signatures, and epic compositions. The genre’s original artists include Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and Rush. Popular artists carrying the torch in this current second generation include my personal favorite, Dream Theater, as well as Porcupine Tree, Symphony X, and Spock’s Beard. Neal Morse’s work is part of this second generation.

I’ve recently enjoyed his work Sola Scriptura, an album with tells the story of Luther in the Reformation. His newest work which I just discovered, is called Lifeline. I’m not sure yet if I enjoy it as much as Sola Scriptura, but it is still obviously the work of a musical genius, working in collaboration with other musical phenoms (Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater on drums, and bassist Randy George).

Progressive Rock is a not a favorite genre of most, but if you’re interested in a different kind of Christian music – give a listen to Neal Morse. You can see his entire discography on his website. There are also sample of his music there, as well as on iTunes.
